Psychometric Assessments
At Approach Psychology, we offer comprehensive cognitive and psychometric assessments to support a deeper understanding of a child or young person’s learning profile and developmental needs. Understanding how your child thinks, learns, and processes information is key to supporting their development.
Our cognitive and psychometric assessments provide a comprehensive picture of your child’s strengths and challenges across areas such as memory, attention, language, problem-solving, and processing speed. These assessments are conducted in a supportive environment by experienced Clinical Psychologists using evidence-based assessment tools. Whether you’re seeking clarity on learning difficulties (e.g dyslexia, dyscalculia), intellectual giftedness, attention concerns (ADHD), neurodiversity or developmental delays, our assessments offer valuable insights to identify underlying causes of your child’s difficulties and to tailor support at home and in school.
Each assessment includes a detailed clinical report, individualised recommendations, and a feedback session to support families, educators, and health professionals in creating informed intervention and support plans. We are committed to delivering sensitive, developmentally-appropriate assessments in a supportive environment tailored to each child’s unique needs.
Cognitive (IQ) Testing
For children from 6 years through to adults using the WISC-V and measures of adaptive functioning as required.
Assessment for ADHD
And other difficulties with attention, concentration, hyperactivity and impulsivity using the WISC-V or WAIS-5, Conners CPT3, questionnaires and specific tests of executive functioning.
Learning Assessments
For children aged 6 years through to adults (to investigate the presence of specific learning disabilities) using the WISC-V or WAIS-5 and WIAT-III.
Assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder
Using the ADOS-2 and ADI-R (Gold Standard). This also includes a cognitive assessment if one has not been recently completed.
When to consider psychometric testing for children:
- Learning difficulties: Persistent struggles with reading, writing, or maths despite support may indicate conditions like dyslexia or dyscalculia.
- Attention or behaviour concerns: Trouble focusing, following instructions, or managing impulses could suggest ADHD or executive functioning challenges.
- Emotional or social challenges: Difficulty with friendships, emotional regulation, or adapting to change may point to anxiety, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or sensory sensitivities.
- Giftedness or twice-exceptionality (2e): If a child shows advanced abilities but also faces learning or attention issues, testing can help clarify their unique profile.
- Developmental delays and intellectual concerns: Concerns about speech, motor skills, or social development may warrant early assessment to guide intervention.
- Unexplained academic or behavioural issues: When things feel “off” and the cause isn’t clear, testing can provide clarity and direction.
